Unlike in Windows XP, where hibernation can be enabled or disabled in GUI, you have to do that by command prompt in Windows Vista.

  • Make sure you are running in administrator mode.
  • Type ‘cmd’ in the start menu search box. Press ‘Ctrl+Shift+Enter’.
  • Windows Vista will prompt for your permission.
  • Click ‘Continue’ to run Command Prompt in administrator mode.
  • Type ‘powercfg -h on’ and press enter to enable Hibernation.

  • Type ‘powercfg -h off’ and press enter to disable Hibernation.

  • You must restart the system to enable/disable hibernation.
