I have been thinking to write a concise formula for promotion of websites. Keeping in mind the features of WEB 2.0 intact in your website while promoting the website through white hat techniques.

I found the solution in my CRAB technique. I will be little descriptive about the CRAB techniques. I would spell down the in initials of each letter.

C - Content

R – RSS,

A – Add to *

B – blogs.

Now we would stress upon the importance of each component of the Theory.

Content – Unique and Useful. Whatever might be the content, its should be unique, it should have its own readership and it should be very useful to the reader. Do not throw all the information that you have with you to your readers. Arrange them in an order that makes perfect sense, and use small tips and tricks or just add small bits of information which makes the content interesting.

Keep in mind that simplicity is the key to good content. Right for average readers, rather assume that they do not have a great vocabulary.

Why we unique? The answer is simple you cannot cheat the search engines and neither can you cheat the humans by stealing content from somewhere and the publishing as your own. If you are planning for a website that will continue to grow then you have to think of all the ways through which you can get good content.

RSS – Why did I consider RSS as one of the most important factors for a website. Its simple, it makes the flow of information across the web so easy. Blogs and other website can pick up the contents from your website and automatically display the same. Similarly you can use the content of other blogs, websites and display the same in your website. If the content that you are getting from other websites or blogs in complimenting your content, then its a great way to get unique and regular content for free. Clear specification that this content has been received from the ‘source’ will help you.

You might question how can borrowed data help your website, well we have already answered the question in the above section. If the data is complimenting the data already present in your website then it would add value to the overall content and will surely help the user to get all the relevant data at one place.

Add to *- Small widgets when present besides good quality content, always help it to propagate. In a way you can say people, who like you content will do the off page optimization of your website. They will save the content, share the content, bookmark your content and then recommend your content through the means available. By adding a button for save/share/bookmark you are just giving an easy option to the user to do what they intent to do. That is promoting your content. The only thing to remember here is : They should be automatically interested to promote your content. That is ensured by the first point.

Blog – Why is a blog important for a website. A blog is usually a better place to create content by the users. They read and comment, then someone comes up and again comments on the comments. The interaction of the users with the concept or idea present in the website is done in a better manner through blog rather than through the website. Although the same level of interaction can be ensured in the core website itself, but blogs do have a very loyal customer base and you should not miss that.

Summing it up CRAB – Will ensure that you get some decent traffic on your website and your effort in creation of a website is not wasted.

Google’s upcoming search engine will improve indexing & search speed, accuracy and comprehensiveness. This will really give a wake up call for all SEOs. Companies may have to tweak their SEO techniques.

I tried Google ‘Caffeine’ and found the search results were different on ‘Google Caffeine’ and ‘Google Search’ for the same keyword. This means the algorithm of the search engine has been changed. It is very early to come to a conclusion about the changes in search algorithm used by Google Caffeine.

The results of keyword search of ‘gold rates’ on both sites are listed below. Although the first two links are same, but the third link has changed.

Google ‘Caffeine’ : http://www2.sandbox.google.com

Google Search : http://www.google.com/

Some search engines treat www and non-www domains differently. For example techwhiz.in and www.techwhiz.in may be treated as two different domain names by some search engines. The biggest disadvantage of this is your site’s SEO. The google pagerank, traffic data, inbound and outbound links will be different for techwhiz.in and www.techwhiz.in. In short your website’s potential is getting undermined. Search engines may even penalize your domain for duplicate entry and you may loose a lot of traffic. So, you must set 301 redirection to redirect all non-www traffic to www.

What is a .htaccess file?

When a visitor/spider requests a web page via any means, your web server checks for a .htaccess file. The .htaccess file contains specific instructions for certain requests, including security, redirection issues and how to handle certain errors. You can find this file in your website’s root directory.

What is a 301 redirect?

The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

Implement 301 redirect (for websites running on apache servers)

Download the .htaccess file to your local directory

Open the file in notepad

Add the following text and save the file

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

Upload the .htaccess file to the root directory of your website
