It’s official now Yahoo! search results from Microsoft Bing

Yahoo has formally announced the transition of the Yahoo Search result to Microsoft Bing platform. Yahoo announced the transition of organic search between Yahoo! and Microsoft in its official search blog. Same story has been announced by Bing also on its official blog. Announcement was done by “Shashi Seth” Senior Vice President of Yahoo! Search Products from the Yahoo side and “Satya Nadella” – Senior Vice President, Online Services Division from Bing side.

Now the organic search results will be powered by Bing for Yahoo search in only US and Canada and that too English for now. Transition to other countries and languages will be done over a period of time and I hope the same will be announced in the blogs. This agreement was done around in July 2009 and has ben completed in a year by the join effort of both the companies.

When the search is done on the yahoo a notification at the bottom of the search results indicate that results is “Powered by Bing™”.

Microsoft Security Essentials next version beta launched

Microsoft has announced the beta version of its free antivirus “Microsoft Security Essentials” which is only for genuine Microsoft OS. Microsoft launched first version of the product in September 2009 and come up with the beta version of the 2011 version. This is designed to protect computers from Viruses, malwares and other threats. Beta versions are used by companies to test the product in the real time environment and get a genuine feed back from the users. This helps them to improve the product before the final release. This antivirus is recommended for a beginner and moderate user as it does not have the capability to tweak for the Advanced users.

New features of Microsoft Security Essential antivirus includes:

Microsoft Workspace Live- online file storage and document sharing

Microsoft in its competition with Google has come up with its new free online storage and document sharing site just like Google Docs. Microsoft has named it as Microsoft Office Live Workspace beta.

To start with you will have to login into website for which you need a hotmail or windows live account. Then you have to create a workspace from a long list of workspace designed for specific purpose like

Class workspace
Event workspace
Meeting workspace
Project workspace
School workspace
Travel Workspace

Well I chose Project workspace and some default templates or documents are added like

Project Notes (note)
Project Overview presentation (PPT)
Project proposal (Microsoft Word)
Project Schedule (Event List)
To-do list (Excel sheet)

I can edit them and add more documents like Excel sheet, Word, PPT, Contacts etc. I can even add an existing excel sheet from my Computer to the same.

Then you can share the document with any one which has a hotmail or windows live account along with a message just like an email. Sharing has 2 of the following features.

Editor’s
Viewer’s

Editors can edit the files and the viewers can only read the files. In a single mail you can choose who will be the editors and who will be the visitors just like TO and CC feature in mail.

Overall after using both the Google docs and Microsoft workspace live online tools, i found Microsoft workspace live more interesting. Seems like i will have to come up with a comparison post between the two shortly.

How to: Sync multiple email accounts with Outlook

For all the Outlook users out there who have more than one email account, this is your solution for seamlessly integrating all your mailboxes! Grouping and ‘Syncing’ your accounts have long existed but lacked open publicity from Microsoft. With this article, we hope to get you acquainted with the process of merging multiple accounts and having it all come to the same Outlook profile.

We’ll be working with the assumption that you already have at least one account set up and know your way around Outlook.

Before we begin, keep in mind that all the mails will be saved to a single Outlook Data file. If the mails need to be sorted by ID, separate folders with mail delivery Rules can be created. Furthermore, when composing a mail, make sure the appropriate mail ID to send from is chosen.

To set up your additional account:

Click Tools -> Account Settings
In the next window, click New.
In the next window, choose Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP and click Next.
Enter your details – Name, email address and password.
Outlook will now try to connect and send a test mail. If your details were entered correct, it should give you the option to close the window. Click Finish.

Given the simplicity of this process, any errors encountered would probably stem from the user name/password section.

With this, your accounts should all be sending their mails into a single Outlook account and the sync should be established both ways (sending and receiving). In case you wish to separate the mails into designated folders, follow these steps:

Open Tools -> Account Settings
In the new window, click Change Folder at the bottom of the window.
In the next window, select Personal Folders and click New folder. Give the new folder a name.
Click OK. Your new folder has been created. You can assign a folder to each account as necessary.

This should help you store your mails based on the address it arrives at. With all this done, there is no more need to log in and out of multiple accounts to check your mail.

Use different referencing system in Word 2007

Word 2007 has inbuilt referencing system that lets the user to cite sources of reference and to prepare a bibliography or reference list. It has limited inbuilt referencing styles. The University in which I am studying has set forth the requirement for referencing style to be Harvard style (AGPS). But the Word 2007 does not support the different referencing styles. I searched on the google and found articles related to this. I found http://bibword.codeplex.com/ to be very useful and used its reference styles. Steps to install and use different reference system is mentioned below.

Install different referencing styles in Word 2007

Download the zipped file containing different styles of references and unzip it. (Download)
Copy all the files.
Make sure all the word documents are closed.
Locate the folder where Office 2007 is installed on your system.
Then browse to the folder ‘/Office12/Bibliography/Style’ and paste all the files.
Different reference styles are installed in Word 2007.

Change reference style in Word 2007

After you have successfully installed the reference styles, open Word 2007.
Goto ‘References’ and click next to ‘Style:’ to select from the list and change the reference style.
