DNS (Domain Name System)
DNS is a standard technology for managing the names of Web sites and other Internet domains.
An often used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the “phone book” for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. DNS technology allows you to type domain names into your Web browser like techwhiz.in and your computer to automatically find that address on the Internet.

DNS Server
A DNS Server is any computer that is registered for the Domain Name System. There are many DNS servers and they are organized in a hierarchy. The top-level servers are called root servers which store the database of domain names and their corresponding IP addresses. While the lower level DNS servers are mostly owned by Internet Service Providers (e.g. BSNL) and other organizations (e.g. Open DNS). DNS servers communicate with each other while seeking the IP address for a particular domain name. DNS networking is based on client/server architecture. The web browser functions as client (also called DNS resolver).
