Recently I came across the concept of solar back packs. I haven’t seen one in India till now, so I thought about writing this post about interesting use of technology in backpacks – renewable energy powered.

Solar Backpack:

Solar backpack is a high end backpack which has solar panels installed on the front of the backpack which with the help of sunlight recharges the small solar cells present in the backpack. These cells are in turn used to charge portable electronic devices like mobile phones, iPod and even a laptop.

This technology will enable users to recharge their portable electronic devices by using the solar powered charge in your backpacks.

Highlights of a Solar Backpack:

Recharge portable electronics devices

Take it anywhere

Recharge anytime

Maximize energy efficiency

Who are the major manufacturers of solar backpack?

There are various major manufacturers of solar backpacks around the world you can find it be Google search easily. SEIZpacks are one of the manufactures and they provide an option to customize the product.

Which all devices can be charged using solar backpack?

• Mobile Phones and PDAs
• Mp3 players
• IPods
• GPS navigators

So next time in your retreat to Jungles of India make sure to take these solar backpacks with you so that if GPS battery goes down you have something to recharge it.

Google has declared that last batch of Nexus One phones have arrived and with their sale, the market life of the Nexus One will officially be over.

Reports are flying in that Google is finally finished with its flagship Android phone. The Nexus One, also called the HTC Passion had been introduced to largely positive reviews. Although the reception seemed good, too many problems have plagued what could have been a very successful device.

The first few problems revolved around the touch screen and its connectivity via 3G. Users who encountered problems were also forced to use the Android forums online. Some users were also seen complaining about the phone not being sturdy. The phone was not a failure though – from its launch in January, it has been regarded generally as an excellent example of exactly what Android can do. Tech blogs were also in praise of its implementation of all the updates at the time of release. Although subsequent models like the Motorola Droid have surpassed it in terms of features and updates, it still stands testimony to Google’s foray into the smartphone arena.

The latest post on the Nexus One blog has declared that no more lines of the Nexus One are in the making. With the web store closed, only the few stores that still have leftover stocks of it will be an option for a buyer.

With Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s statement that the ‘mission’ was accomplished with the Nexus One and that no follow ups were planned, this may signal the end of the Google line of phones for the time being.

It is said that- “Books are our best friends” With their pages they help us sail through countless emotions and travel distant lands while lying on a couch! For those who love to keep their favourite books always with them, e-book reader is the right device. These dedicated e-book readers come with their own e-book reading software. The handy gadget can hold thousands of e-books and what’s more is that most of the e-book readers available in the market has an inbuilt dictionary, mp3 player which makes it a complete package for the book lovers. The device is rapidly gaining popularity and many giant technology players have joined the e-book reader device market, the most popular one being Amazon’s Kindle which is banking on its first mover advantage. One of the coolest feature of this gadget is that you can order books online, browse through the journals and newspapers using 3G or WiFi. You can also change the page layout, fonts or use text to speech conversion feature, according to your requirement and mood.

These devices use the electronic paper, e-ink which is similar to the ordinary ink and gives the reading experience analogous to that of a paper book. Unlike other electronic devices, it can be used for reading under direct sunlight as well. Keeping in view its usability as a traveling companion e-book reader device has an excellent battery backup of up to seven days.

E-book reader is a convenient option for the book lovers. Conveying all the pleasures of reading, its only disadvantage when compared with a paper book could be that you would need to be a little more careful about not spilling your coffee over it and can’t probably use it as a pillow in case you doze off while reading!

Kapil Sibal, India’s Human Resource Development Minister unveiled a low cost computing-cum-access device specially designed for the students. The laptop priced at Rs.1500 ($35) is the cheapest available computing device and the prices are expected to go down after production begins. It is the result of 5 years of work by the experts from IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras and IISC. India will distribute the laptop through educational institutions under ‘National Mission on Education through Information and Technology (NMEICT)’. With wireless internet connectivity being made accessible in rural areas by BSNL and this low cost laptop, students from rural parts of the country would be able to connect to the internet which was a distant dream for them till now. But we would have to wait for the device to be actually distributed to the students before we could comment on its usability any further.
