According to unconfirmed sources, Notion Ink’s Adam will be available for pre-order from 9-Dec-2010.

Here is a teaser posted by Rohan on Notion Ink’s blog.

Expectations are running high among all gadget lovers as Adam which is seen as a genuine threat to iPad is about to be born. Its a good news especially for Indian consumers who have historically been neglected and discriminated by Apple. The biggest question now is “Can Adam be an iPad of India?”

Gmail comes up with a way to save you from your flooded inbox.

Hoping to offer a solution to the strenuous sorting process that most of us face daily, Gmail has come up with Priority Inbox – a way to have your mail sorted in a way that reduces the time spent in ploughing through it all. As with any Gmail addition, it is in Beta

Priority Inbox splits your inbox into three sections – the most important mails that are unopened end up in the topmost section to grab your attention. The next section contains mails that you decide to mark as important. The third section contains mails which are considered the least important. However, if a mail which is important ends up in this section, you can simply mark it to push it to the upper sections.

All this is in addition to the filtering already present in Gmail. The sorting mechanism for this seems to work in a way similar to the one that sorts your regular mail from junk – and knowing Gmail, this may be a good thing.

The feature has not been offered to all the users yet but Gmail has declared that it will be provided to everyone by the end of the week.

In the same time Facebook which was at 7.5 million in July 2009 has rose to 20.9 million users, a very strong growth of 179%.

Orkut (16%) and Bharatstudent.com (3%) has reported the slowest growth of all even though the social networking phenomenon continues to rise world wide at the rate on 25% and Indian social networking audience Soars 43% in Past Year. Orkut was way ahead of facebook last year but failed to make innovative changes and thus lagged behind facebook by a considerable margin this year. Other major Indian players are also striving hard to make an impact in the Indian market as they are getting stiff resistance from facebook alone.

Social networking worldwide visitors have grown over 23% due to strong growth in markets like India, South Korea, Brazil etc. India is now 7th largest market in the world and will cross UK soon to become the 6th biggest player.

About a year from its public release, Google Wave has been terminated.

Google has finally made the statement that many have been predicting – Wave will not be developed further. Google Wave, an open source communication and collaboration platform, pronounced by some as a response to the social media monopoly of Facebook, has finally been laid to rest. Wave never got a significant following outside the Google fan base and many users found Wave too complex to use. Despite how-to videos by Google demonstrating Wave’s flexibility and usefulness, the wave of enthusiasm to use the service died soon after launch. About a year has passed since its release.

Google’s statement does not mean the end of Wave. In bits, the essence of Wave will still carry on:

…despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began.

Wave’s success stories came from its complete open development environment. Many automated tasks could be handled, and additional applications (comparable to Facebook apps) could be incorporated in the Wave being shared with contacts. The open ended development process also allowed for the service to be tailored to the needs of specific groups. Some companies even accepted Wave as a platform for intra-sectional communication.

The closing of the development process only applies to Wave as a separate product. As seen in the statement, parts of it will still be used in other Google services and the code and knowledge gained from the Wave experience may well birth a new service in the future.

When Wave came out, comparisons were being drawn to the sci-fi TV series Firefly and its follow-up movie, Serenity. Quotes from the movie were often heard at developer meets and the term Wave itself was derived from the fictional mode of communication in the series. The series was cancelled but had obtained a significant fan following (the Google Wave team, among others). Now, in a final ironic twist, Wave has met the same fate.

The Information Commissioner Office of the UK has cleared Google Street View of personal data collection charges.

The Information Commissioner Office (ICO) of the United Kingdom has cleared Google’s Street View division of charges related to collection of personal data from wi-fi networks.

Earlier this year, an investigation by data protection authorities in Germany brought to light the gathering of personal data. Street View was in the process of adding images to physical locations and public domain wi-fi hotspots were scanned for gathering location specific information. This included private data from unprotected wi-fi networks.

When news broke, Google declared that no personal information was collected and that the mass of data would only be used for location resolution. The ICO statement was welcomed by Google. The ICO also declared that it would be watching the progress of the cases in other countries and any new information would be scrutinized.

Google has apologized for the data gathering and had announced earlier that no more wi-fi data would be included in the Street View logs. The move by the UK is the first in what is expected to be a long chain. Google is still under investigation in many countries, including Germany, the US and Australia.
