Boot Windows XP in Safe Mode

Method 1: Using ‘F8′ Key

  1. If the computer is running, shut it down.
  2. Press the power button to boot the system.
  3. After the pre-boot menu, gently keep tapping the ‘F8′ key till you get a black screen with different options listed on it.
  4. Use the arrow key to select ‘Safe Mode’ and press enter to begin booting in Safe Mode.
  5. Once the system boots itself in Safe Mode you will be asked to confirm. Click on ‘Yes’ and Windows XP is now in Safe Mode.

Method 2: Using ‘System Configuration Utility’

  1. Start the computer normally.
  2. Make sure you to close all the running programs.
  3. Click ‘Start–>Run’. Type ‘msconfig’ and press enter or click on ‘OK’ button. It opens ‘System Configuration Utility’.
  4. On the ‘System Configuration Utility’ click on ‘BOOT.IN’ tab.
  5. Check ‘/SAFEBOOT’ on ‘BOOT.INI’ tab and click ‘OK’

  6. You will be prompted to restart the system. Click on ‘Restart’ button to restart the system in Safe Mode’.
  7. Once the system boots itself in Safe Mode you will be asked to confirm. Click on ‘Yes’ and Windows XP is now in Safe Mode.
  8. To boot in normal mode make sure to uncheck the ‘/SAFEBOOT’ on ‘BOOT.INI’ tab in ‘System Configuration Utility’ before restarting the system.

Note: The above methods has been tested on PCs running only Windows XP, it has not been tested on PCs running multiple operating systems.
